How Israel’s Air-Defense System and the Iron Dome Work

Israel operates impressive air-defense systems that have seen heavy action over the past year. The system includes the Arrow 3 anti-ballistic-missile defense system developed jointly with the U.S. The Arrow 3 intercepts long-range ballistic missiles that leave the Earth’s atmosphere, while an earlier version of the Arrow is used for medium-to-long-range missile threats. The David’s Sling system is a land-based stationary battery that can intercept surface-to-surface missiles, planes, drones and other projectiles at a range of about 190 miles, encompassing the whole of Israel. The Iron Dome, its most well-known system, specializes in dealing with shorter-range attacks and can intercept surface-to-surface rockets and drones at a range of about 43 miles.
